1. Clothing Essentials – Costa Rica Packing List for Women
Lightweight and Breathable Clothes
Costa Rica’s climate is typically warm and humid, so pack lightweight and breathable clothes to wear. Opt for moisture-wicking fabrics to stay cool and dry. Quick-drying vacation clothes are ideal for both the beach and jungle adventures. These are the clothes I wear during Minnesota summers and you will find them on my packing list to any Costa Rica vacation.

Layering Options for a Costa Rica Packing List for Women
The weather in Costa Rica can be unpredictable, especially in the mountains and rainforests, here are layering ideas if you’re wondering what to pack for a trip to Costa Rica. Bring a few layers to stay comfortable. We were in Guanacaste in March and I did bring a light sweater. Although I really didn’t need it often, due to the warmth in Costa Rica, I was glad I had it on my packing list because we had air conditioning in our rental.
- Light sweater or hoodie for cooler evenings
- Rain jacket or poncho to stay dry during tropical showers
As far as rain gear, if you’re wondering what to pack for a trip to Costa Rica, some would say a poncho over a rain jacket. Either will do the trick, but if you’ll be warmer climates, some like a poncho more due to being more breathable.
Swimwear for your Costa Rica Packing List
With so many beautiful beaches and natural hot springs, swimwear is a must. I had 3 swimsuits on my Costa Rica packing list because we wore them daily. Here are some cute swimsuit options for your Costa Rica packing for women.
- Swimsuits (consider bringing more than one)
- Cover-ups or sarongs for beach days
2. Footwear
Comfortable Walking/Hiking Shoes
Whether you’re exploring cities or hiking through rainforests, comfortable walking shoes are an essential for your Costa Rica packing list. Your shoe type really depends on where you’re planning to go and do in Costa Rica. I only needed Keen hiking sandals for our Costa Rica adventures.
- Hiking boots or sturdy sneakers for outdoor activities
- Water shoes or closed toe sandals water adventures or hikes
Casual Shoes for Costa Rica
For everyday wear and city exploration. My go-to shoe on my packing list to Costa Rica are Birkenstock sandals. I like how they look and they’re comfortable. If you’re wondering what the best shoe to pack for a trip to Costa Rica, I would lean towards Birkenstocks and Keens to cover the bases.
- Flip-flops or casual sandals
- Comfortable flats or casual shoes
3. Accessories for a Costa Rica Packing List
Sun Protection
The tropical sun in Costa Rica can be intense, so protect yourself from UV rays, a must for your Costa Rica packing list.
- Wide-brimmed hat or baseball cap
- Sunglasses with UV protection
- Sunscreen (reef-safe options are best to protect marine life)
I brought a beach hat and a ball cap. I am a hat girl, so I brought a hat for the beach/pool and one for hikes.
Insect Repellent
Mosquitoes and other insects can be prevalent, especially in rainforests, therefore add a good bug spray with DEET to your packing list to Costa Rica. We went to Guanacaste in March and never needed the bug spray we packed, but I advise to pack it anyway, because you’d rather be safe than sorry! Below you will find a good spray and wipes to add to your Costa Rica packing list. Wipes are nice if you plan on coming to Costa Rica with a carryon only.
- DEET-based insect repellent or natural alternatives like citronella
- Insect repellent clothing for added protection
