Planning a trip to Northern Ireland? If you’re dreaming of a 3-day Northern Ireland itinerary filled with dramatic coastlines tours, friendly cities like Belfast, Celtic history, and those “wow, I can’t believe this is real” landscapes — welcome. You’re in the right place.

This itinerary is based on my own trip, including what I loved, what I’d tweak, and the little things I wish I’d known beforehand. From Belfast to the legendary Giant’s Causeway and the famous Antrim Coast drive, these are the experiences that truly made Northern Ireland unforgettable for us. I’ll also share some great free things to do and places to visit in Northern Ireland and budget-friendly places to stay in Belfast.

Day 1: Belfast – Culture, History, and Local Flavor

We started our 3-day Northern Ireland itinerary tour in Belfast, and honestly, I’m glad we did — this city has layers. Every corner has a story, and you can feel the energy shift from one neighborhood to the next. This city was a perfect (nearly) ending to our 8-day United Kingdom trip.

How did we get around Belfast this day? Hop-On-Hop-Off bus is a great way to get around Belfast on a 3-day itinerary 👇

Morning: Tour Titanic Belfast – A Must on Your 3 days Northern Ireland Itinerary

Titanic Belfast is one of those places that everyone tells you not to miss — and for good reason. I was surprised by how emotional the experience felt. The museum sits exactly where the Titanic was built, and the exhibits pull you right into the city’s shipbuilding past. Even if you’re not a big museum person, this one is absolutely worth it.

Afternoon: Belfast City Hall & St. George’s Market

Afterward, we took our HOHO bus to Belfast City Hall. The architecture alone will stop you in your tracks, and the best part? The guided tours are completely free.

Next up was St. George’s Market, which ended up being one of my favorite parts of the day. There’s something about wandering between stalls, listening to local musicians, and grabbing a bite that makes you feel like you’re slipping into the rhythm of the city. We snagged a delicious lunch at Holohan’s — highly recommend!

From there, we walked past Queen’s University and the Grand Opera House, both gorgeous and absolutely worth the detour.

Evening: Cathedral Quarter Vibes

By evening, the Cathedral Quarter is buzzing — pubs spilling out into cobblestone alleys, murals everywhere you look, and live music drifting down the streets. It’s such a vibe.

If you’re trying to decide where to stay in Belfast, the Cathedral Quarter is one of the best areas. Lots of hotels, easy transportation, and tons of charm.

Pro Tip:
We used the Hop-On-Hop-Off bus around Belfast and genuinely loved it. It turned out to be a super easy way to see all the major sites without juggling buses or taxis.

Day 2: The Antrim Coast & Giant’s Causeway

This was hands-down my favorite day of the entire trip. Even if you only have 3-days in Northern Ireland, make sure you dedicate one itinerary day to the Antrim Coast.

We didn’t rent a car, so we booked a small-group coach tour. Our guide somehow managed to time everything so we arrived before the crowds — something I appreciated even more when I saw the big buses rolling in behind us! Highly recommend this specific tour!

Morning: Antrim Coast, Giant’s Causeway

We started our adventure in Belfast, driving up the Antrim Coast. Our first stop was Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge. We were on a tour and, unfortunately, tour buses no longer stop and allow passengers to cross due to overcrowding. To thoroughly enjoy the rope bridge, I would suggest renting a car and doing this on your own. That will be the next time for me!

On your day to see Giants Causeway, add in Carrick Rope Bridge on your itinerary.

Next, we rode to Giant’s Causeway which is one of those places where photos just don’t do it justice. Walking out onto those hexagonal basalt columns with the waves crashing around you feels almost unreal. We could’ve stayed there for hours. The only downfall to Giant’s Causeway is it hosts plenty of crowds (even in October). My best tip is to go early in the morning or after the visitor center closes to view it with less crowds.

Fun fact: the site is technically free if you skip the visitor center, a great choice when looking for places to visit in Northern Ireland for free or budget-friendly.

Afternoon: Dunlace Castle and Bushmill Distillery

Afterward, we stopped at Dunluce Castle, which looks like something straight out of Game of Thrones. Perched on the edge of a cliff, it’s dramatic in the best way. It’s a beautiful sight with the ocean as its backdrop.

On your day to see Giants Causeway, add in Dunlace Castle on your itinerary.

Bushmills was our next stop. It’s a cozy little town with traditional pubs and, of course, the famous whiskey distillery. If you prefer something closer to the water, Ballycastle is also a great option (if you’re not on a tour).

Late Afternoon: Dark Hedges

Our final stop of the day was the Dark Hedges, and it honestly felt like stepping into another world. The avenue of dramatic beech trees was the perfect way to wind down after a day of sightseeing around Northern Ireland.

Day 3 of You Northern Ireland Itinerary: Belfast or Derry — Your Choice

Depending on your mood and energy level, you can either stay in Belfast for a chill day or make the trip to Derry for a deeper dive into Northern Ireland’s history.

Option 1: Stay Local in Belfast

Morning: Ulster Museum & Botanic Gardens

The Ulster Museum is completely free and has a surprisingly great mix of exhibits — everything from fossils to modern art. It’s right next to the Botanic Gardens, which makes for a peaceful morning walk.

Afternoon: Crumlin Road Gaol or Cave Hill

Crumlin Road Gaol is a fascinating — and sometimes heavy — look at Northern Ireland’s past. If you want something more outdoorsy, Cave Hill offers one of the best views over the city.

Evening:

Belfast is full of fantastic restaurants. Howard Street and Lisburn Road are packed with great spots to end your trip with a memorable meal.

Option 2: Day Trip to Derry

We debated going to Derry and I’m glad we made the trip. It ended up being one of the most meaningful parts of our itinerary.

Derry is a wonderful city in Northern Ireland to visit.

Morning: Walk the City Walls

The walls are completely free to explore and give you a great overview of the city’s layout.

Afternoon: Bogside Murals & Guildhall

The murals in Bogside are incredibly powerful and speak to the city’s history in a way nothing else does. The Guildhall nearby is beautiful and has great exhibits that tie everything together.

Evening:

Head back to Belfast for one last cozy pub night.

Our luggage and backpack carry on for our 3 day Northern Ireland itinerary.

Wondering how to pack for your Northern Ireland holiday? Here is a complete guide to packing for Northern Ireland.

Where to Stay in Belfast

We stayed right by the Titanic Museum at the Premier Inn. It was truly a great stay and I have no complaints about the hotel itself. The only thing I would have done differently here is choose a hotel closer to the city center. We wanted to be near the Titanic Museum and we accomplished that goal, but the area lacked restaurant options and entertainment. If you want more of these options, here are other hotel options that would be more suitable.

Grand Central Hotel Belfast is a great option. It’s got a central location, great breakfast, and views for days. But if you’re looking for something more budget-friendly, check out hotels or guesthouses in the Premier Inn Belfast City Cathedral Quarter or ibis Belfast Queens Quarter. When deciding where to stay in Belfast, choose somewhere close to a bus stop or central attractions to save time.
