Packing Guide to Belize

Essentials to Pack:

What to wear on Caye Caulker or Ambergris Caye, Belize?

Swimwear:

Firstly, This packing guide to Belize could almost end here… Bring at least 2 swimsuits and a couple swim covers. If you have this along, you almost don’t need anything else. I spent a lot of my Belize trip in a swimsuit, so be sure to pack a suit or two (or three) that you like. Of course, along with a cute coverup.

Clothing:

When you’re wondering what to wear on the islands of Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye, Belize, keep in mind to pack light. You will not need as much as you think you will. I like to stick with light-breathable clothing. I will highlight some of my favorites I brought along below. When I wasn’t in a swimsuit, I wore a dress or shorts and a tank. You really only need to pack a few of each.

Sun Protection: What to pack for sun protection in Belize?

The Caribbean sun can be intense. Therefore, this packing list for Belize includes high SPF sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and polarized sunglasses to shield yourself from harmful UV rays. Keep in mind the barrier reef and be sure to use a “reef-safe” formula when choosing your sunscreen.

Bug Protection: What kind of bug protection should be on my packing list to Belize?

While enjoying the outdoors, especially during sunset or in wooded areas, insect repellent is a must to ward off pesky mosquitoes and other bugs. Sand flies, no-see-ums, and sea roaches (or sea lice) can be the peskier bugs you’ll experience on the islands. During our stay, we didn’t have a big problem with them, but I know many others have, so that is why it’s an important item on this packing guide to Belize. We had a few sand fly bites and a few sea lice. Both are nuisances, but not bad enough for us to use products. However, to be on the safe side, I would plan to bring along bug spray (with DEET) for the sand flies or mosquitos and baby oil or Avon Skin So soft for sea lice. People swear by these products to help with these pesky creatures.

Snorkeling Gear: Will I need snorkeling gear on my printable packing list to Belize?

Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker boast some of the world’s most spectacular snorkeling sites. Therefore, bring your own snorkel mask, fins, and underwater camera to capture the vibrant marine life beneath the crystal-clear waters. Snorkeling gear is on the printable packing list to Belize for a reason. Additionally, we did some snorkeling on our own terms, under docks, and at beaches where we stayed. We also did a snorkeling excursion. For this, we ended up using the masks and gear provided to us by the company we went with, Fishing King Belize, which I highly recommend. The mask seen below is the one we brought with and love, which is why we included it on this packing guide to Belize.

Also, don’t forget the GoPro for some great underwater moments!

Waterproof Phone Case:

In addition, it should be noted, to keep your phone safe from splashes and accidental drops, invest in a waterproof phone case. Perfect for water activities like snorkeling, kayaking, or simply lounging on the beach. This is one of my favorite tips because it is so easily forgotten, but makes so much sense. I use one every time I travel (even in the Blue Lagoon in Iceland).

Casual Footwear:

A big question everyone has is what should I wear on my feet in Belize? Leave the heels at home and opt for comfortable footwear such as flip-flops, sandals, or water shoes. These are ideal for strolling along sandy beaches or exploring the charming streets of the islands. All I wore, while in Belize, was Birkenstocks or Hey Dudes. If you plan on taking any mainland excursions, I would plan on bringing Keen Sandals too.

Reusable Water Bottle:

Stay hydrated throughout your adventures by carrying a reusable water bottle. Many establishments on the islands offer water refills, reducing plastic waste and keeping you refreshed. Moreover, we used our traveling water bottles (as seen below) to ensure we had access to clean water wherever we went. We bring these along on our vacations because they fold up to make them light and packable. But, they do not keep your water cold and fresh like a Yeti or Stanley. These are definitely more superior in that way, but obviously more cumbersome to pack, so take at your own discretion.

Lightweight Backpack or Tote:

A compact backpack or tote bag is perfect for carrying your essentials while exploring the islands. Choose a lightweight and water-resistant option to keep your belongings safe and dry. This is a great idea to have more adventures than just Belize. We have used our dry bag is Costa Rica, Iceland, and Ireland as well.

Travel Documents and Cash:

Don’t forget to pack your passport, travel insurance documents, and any necessary reservations or confirmations. While credit cards are widely accepted, having some cash on hand is always useful for small purchases or tips. We brought about $1,000 USD with us for tips and other small purchases.

For my notes and reservations, I have a portfolio, like pictured below. In most circumstances, I like to print off my reservations and notes/emails so I any necessary information is readily accessible. I carry this in my backpack. I keep notes of all my travel plans, itineraries, etc. in this.

Bonus Tips:

  • Electricity: Belize operates on 110V electricity, so remember to pack adapters if your devices require them. If you’re from the US, no adapter is needed.
  • Medical Kit: Include basic first aid supplies, such as bandages, pain relievers, and any essential medications.
  • Respectful Attire: While the islands have a laid-back atmosphere, remember to dress respectfully when visiting religious sites or local communities.

If you take pills or supplements, here is a pill organizer that will help keep you in line. Easy to track which days you took your pills and fits nicely in your carry on.

By packing smart and considering these essential items, you’ll be well-prepared to enjoy an unforgettable vacation in the stunning paradise of Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker. So, grab your suitcase, soak up the sun, and get ready for an adventure of a lifetime in the Caribbean!
