Where should you stay and how should you get around on you 3-day itinerary to Iceland?

Before diving into the details of your Iceland 3-day itinerary, it’s crucial to plan where you’ll stay and how to navigate the country.

Where to Stay

If you’re wondering where to stay near Reykjavik for a 3-day trip, consider a cozy cabin or rental home in Selfoss. Selfoss vacation rentals offer the perfect balance of proximity to Reykjavik and easy access to the South Coast. Many rentals include hot tubs, scenic views, and full kitchens, making them an excellent choice for travelers who enjoy a bit more space and privacy. Personally, I like to rent a cabin outside of Reykjavik, even if my itinerary has me there for 3 days in Iceland. I have been to Iceland in the fall twice, both times were in October and even though I stayed a week, I would still stay near Selfoss.

For those who prefer the city’s vibrant energy, there are numerous options for staying in Reykjavik, from luxury hotels to budget-friendly apartments. Here is a post dedicated for places to stay in Reykjavik in the heart of the city center, so a great idea for a 3-day trip.

Furthermore, here is a great VRBO rental with a hot tub near Selfoss, Iceland, which is a great vacation rental destination for a 3-day itinerary.

How to Get Around Iceland on your 3-Day Itinerary

I would do one of two things for getting around while you embark on a 3 day itinerary to Iceland. Either rent a car and explore on your own or use public transportation and go on organized tours. If you’re staying outside of Reykjavik for your 3 day Iceland itinerary trip, I would suggest renting a vehicle. We rented a car during both our fall trips to Iceland in October and 3 days is plenty of time to explore this itinerary via self-drive.

Day 1: Golden Circle and Blue Lagoon for your 3-Day Itinerary

Start your Iceland 3-day itinerary by exploring the iconic Golden Circle. Visit top attractions in Reykjavik like Thingvellir National Park. Marvel at the Geysir Geothermal Area, Gullfoss Waterfall, and Kerid Crater.

After a day of sightseeing, relax at the Blue Lagoon. Before leaving Reykjavik, try the famous Icelandic hot dog Reykjavik at a local stand—it’s a must for food lovers visiting Iceland!

Tour the Golden Circle:

  • Thingvellir National Park: Head out on the renowned Golden Circle tour, with the first stop at Thingvellir National Park. This UNESCO World Heritage site is not only a geological marvel, where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet, but also rich in Icelandic history.

Geysir Geothermal Area:

Next, visit the Geysir Geothermal Area. Watch the Strokkur geyser erupt every few minutes, shooting boiling water up to 30 meters high.

Geysir is a highlight to see if you have three days Iceland.

Gullfoss Waterfall:

Thirdly, marvel at Gullfoss Waterfall, one of Iceland’s most famous natural attractions. The powerful two-tiered waterfall is a breathtaking sight.

Gullfoss is a highlight on the Golden Circle itinerary and a great place to stop if you have a 3 day itinerary.

Kerid Crater:

Finally, take a hike around Kerid crater and marvel at this old volcano sight.

Thingvellir National Park is a highlight on the Golden Circle itinerary and a great place to stop for a three day itinerary. Kerid Crater is a popular Golden Circle stop and was close to our Selfoss vacation rental.

Additionally, read more here about the Golden Circle and bonus stops for a full day of travel. Also, view the map of the Golden Circle with where the attractions are along the way.

Relax at the Blue Lagoon: After a day of sightseeing, unwind at the Blue Lagoon, a world-renowned geothermal spa. Soak in the milky blue waters, as well as surround yourself by a stunning lava field, and let the mineral-rich water rejuvenate your body and soul. We loved this Iceland itinerary stop when we went in the fall. The Blue Lagoon is a short drive from Reykjavik, making it a great activity option for a short 3-day itinerary to Iceland.

One of my favorite hacks to the lagoons is a waterproof phone pouch. If you want to take pictures while you’re in the lagoon, this is great to have so you can safely carry your phone with you.

Day 2: South Coast Adventure

On the second day of your Iceland 3-day itinerary, head to the South Coast for unforgettable natural wonders. Visit Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss Waterfalls, and don’t miss Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach. Afterward, return to your Selfoss vacation rental for a relaxing evening in a hot tub under the stars. If you’re staying outside of Reykjavik and you want to try an Icelandic hot dog, there is a place in the town of Selfoss that has great hot dogs!

Waterfalls and Black Sand Beaches:

  • Seljalandsfoss Waterfall: Start your day with a visit to Seljalandsfoss Waterfall. Take the unique opportunity to walk behind the waterfall and experience its beauty from a different perspective.
  • Skogafoss Waterfall: Continue to Skogafoss Waterfall, another iconic and powerful waterfall. Don’t forget to climb the stairs to the viewing platform for a panoramic view.

Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach: Explore the dramatic Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach, known for its striking black sand, basalt columns, and the Reynisdrangar sea stacks rising from the ocean. Without a doubt, be cautious of the powerful waves, as the area is known for its unpredictable surf.

Wrap up your Iceland 3-day itinerary by immersing yourself in the culture and energy of Reykjavik. Wander through Laugavegur Street, explore the Perlan Museum, and join a Northern Lights tour if you’re visiting in winter.

Don’t forget to grab one last Icelandic hot dog in Reykjavik before heading to the airport. It’s the perfect way to savor Iceland’s unique culinary culture.

Northern Lights Tours

Between September and April, take a guided tour to see the breathtaking aurora borealis. Without a doubt, the best months to join a northern lights tour is in the winter months. Furthermore, I have been twice in the fall (October) and have never seen them on my Iceland itinerary.
