Clothing Essentials for you Packing List: What to Wear in Scotland in September or Any Season

Whether you’re visiting in the fall or during any other season, layering is key in Scotland. Be mindful of the season and the temperatures, but in summer months you will have nicer days where layering isn’t as important. In winter months, you will want a decent base layer and a waterproof puffer jacket. We traveled to Scotland in September and October and my packing list included a fleece-lined waterproof jacket and sweaters.

  • Waterproof Jacket: A must-have for rainy days, especially in October.
  • Warm Layers: Sweaters and fleeces are essential for your packing list for Scotland in October when temperatures drop.
  • Light Layers: For milder days in September, pack lightweight shirts and tops to layer under your jacket. Refer to our printable Scotland packing list to ensure you cover all bases. Light layers are worn more in summer months.
  • Scarf, Gloves, and Hat: The wind can be brisk, especially in coastal areas or the highlands.
  • Comfortable Walking Shoes: For city exploring and hikes, pack sturdy, waterproof shoes.

Make sure your Scotland packing list includes clothing for both warm and cool days, as the weather can vary drastically in a single day.

Waterproof Jacket – A Must on your Printable Scotland Packing List

My go-to brand is Helly Hansen. These are high-quality coats and are waterproof. The middle coat is the one I wore most while I was in Scotland in September and October and are a great addition to a fall packing list. I wore the shell in Scotland in September also, but this would be my main jacket if I took a summer trip. My parka was left at home for my fall trip, as I didn’t need that warm of a coat. I would consider a coat like this if you were going to Scotland in the winter months.

Comfortable Waterproof Shoes – Essential for your Scotland Packing List

Having comfortable and waterproof shoes are key for your Scotland packing list and are on the pdf printable list provided. When I traveled to Scotland in September and October, I had the first three shoes on my packing list. The Keens I didn’t bring along my last trip, simply because I wasn’t hiking. If you go to Scotland and plan longer hikes, bring a pair of hiking boots, similar to the Keens about. The Vessi and Sorel shoes were perfect for what my Scotland itinerary entailed. Both shoes are waterproof and comfortable, which is key for big touring days with plenty of walking. The leather Sorel boots were perfect for dinners out and shopping, and being waterproof, I could wear them rain or shine!

Other Key Clothing for your Scotland Packing List

This was one outfit I wore on my travels to Scotland and a good addition to your September or October packing list. I brought along two Varley sweatshirts, one being the one pictured above. These sweatshirts are more on the spendy side, but I love this brand. I wore this sweatshirt with a pair of black leggings and finished the outfit with my Vessi shoes or Sorel boots, depending on the activity.

This is another sample outfit I had along. Joggers are where cute meets comfortable and paired with a striped undershirt and denim jacket, you have a great outfit.

Accessories & Gear

Keep these accessories handy for weatherproofing and convenience.

  • Umbrella: Though often windy, a sturdy travel umbrella is useful for sudden rain showers.
  • Daypack/Backpack: A waterproof bag to carry your essentials during day trips.
  • Travel Towel: Lightweight and quick-drying, ideal for hiking or outdoor activities.
  • Binoculars: If you’re into wildlife or birdwatching, pack a small pair for Scotland’s rugged landscape.

Toiletries & Health Essentials

Don’t forget your personal care items.

  • Basic Toiletries: Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothbrush, and toothpaste.
  • Sunscreen: Yes, even in Scotland! The UV rays can be strong, especially during long walks outdoors.
  • First-Aid Kit: Band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and any essential medication.

Include all toiletries in your Scotland packing list pdf so you won’t leave anything behind.

Curling Irons and Hair Dryers on your Scotland Packing List

Hair tools are a tricky subject when it comes to traveling to Scotland from the US. Due to the required power conversion, if you use your US curler or hair dryer, you could ruin it. Trust me here, I did this years ago. I used a dryer with a converter and my blowdryer started smoking. Since then, I have used blowdryers in my EU accommodations, which fortunately, anywhere I’ve stayed has provided. I bought the curling iron/straightener combo, pictured below, off of Amazon. It automatically converts. I am pleased to tell you that it worked fabulously in Scotland, England and Ireland!

Tech & Travel Gadgets

Stay connected and capture the beauty of Scotland with the right gadgets.

  • Camera/Phone: Capture the stunning scenery of the highlands and cities.
  • Chargers & Adapters: Scotland uses UK plugs, so be sure to pack the appropriate adapters. This is crucial for your packing list for Scotland in October as daylight hours shorten and you’ll want your devices charged for evening use.
  • Power Bank: Keep your phone charged while exploring remote areas.
