Playa Hermosa is one of the quieter beach towns in Guanacaste, which is exactly why we loved it. Unlike the busier vibe in Tamarindo, Playa Hermosa felt calm, safe, and family-friendly while still offering plenty of restaurants and activities nearby.
Villa Sol is perched on a hillside overlooking the bay, giving many of the villas incredible ocean views and cooling breezes. The location ended up being one of our favorite parts of the stay because it felt tucked away and peaceful, but we were still only minutes from the beach and nearby dining options.
One thing that surprised me most was how walkable the area actually was. Playa Hermosa beach was about a 10-minute walk from our villa, and while there are some hills, it was manageable even with kids. The resort also runs a trolley constantly throughout the day if walking isn’t your thing.

In my opinion—yes, especially if you want more space than a traditional hotel room.

The Private Plunge Pool Experience
At first, I thought the plunge pool might feel unnecessary since the resort already has larger pools—but we used it constantly.

How Long Were the Trolley Waits at Villa Sol?
Since the resort is built into the hillside, the trolley system is actually really helpful.
We rarely waited more than 5–10 minutes for a trolley, and during busier pool hours there always seemed to be one nearby. Drivers were friendly and often stopped if they saw guests walking uphill.
That said, if mobility is a concern, you may want to request a villa closer to the pools or restaurant because some of the hills are steep in the heat.
Is the Food at Villa Sol Costa Rica Good?
This is probably the area where I’d give the most balanced review.
The buffet was good—not incredible—but definitely convenient for families. Breakfast was our favorite meal because there were plenty of options including fresh fruit, eggs, rice and beans, pastries, and made-to-order items.
The swim-up bar, however, was a highlight. The drinks were great, and the bartenders were genuinely fun and welcoming. Huge shoutout to Ivan, who made fantastic cocktails all week long.
One reason we skipped the all-inclusive package was because Playa Hermosa has several great local restaurants nearby, and honestly, I’m glad we explored them. Some of our favorite meals during the trip were at beachfront restaurants watching the sunset over the Pacific.
If you like flexibility, I’d personally recommend booking the villa without all-inclusive unless you plan to spend most of your time at the resort.
Pro Tip: Costa Rica has great all-inclusive hotels, but it is one of those places where it is best to skip the all-inclusive package and venture out to the local restaurants.
Beach Walkability: Can You Walk to Playa Hermosa Beach?
Yes—and this was a huge plus for us.
The walk to Playa Hermosa beach was easy enough for our family and took around 10 minutes depending on villa location. The beach itself is gorgeous, especially at sunset, with calm water and darker volcanic sand typical of Guanacaste.
Unlike some Costa Rica beaches with rough surf, Playa Hermosa felt much calmer and more family-friendly.
There are also several beachfront restaurants within walking distance, which made dinner outings simple and enjoyable.

One reason Villa Sol works so well as a home base is its location near some of Guanacaste’s best activities.

While the hotel rooms are perfectly fine for shorter stays or couples who plan to spend most of their time exploring, my honest opinion is that the villas are significantly better—especially for families or longer vacations.
The biggest difference is the amount of space. After long days in the Costa Rican heat, having separate bedrooms, a living area, and a kitchen made the trip far more relaxing for us. We loved being able to store snacks, make coffee in the mornings, and spread out instead of feeling cramped in a single hotel room.
