If you’re planning a trip to Rome, visiting the Colosseum is probably already on your list and a review is what you need. But once you start looking at tickets and tours, things can get confusing. Do you need a guided tour? Is a Colosseum tour worth the money? Should you visit the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill too?
We had all of those questions before our trip to Rome.

During our visit, we decided to take the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill guided tour, and I’m so glad we did. The tour was informative, interesting, and gave us so much more context than we would have gotten simply walking through the ancient ruins on our own.
And let me tell you something else: we visited Rome in August, and it was HOT. 🥵
The heat definitely added a challenge to the experience, but bringing plenty of water and an AC neck fan made a huge difference.
So, is a Colosseum tour worth it?
For us, absolutely. Here’s my honest review of the Colosseum tour we took, including what we loved, what to know before you go, and my best tips for surviving a Colosseum visit in the August heat.

Quick Verdict: Is a Colosseum Tour Worth It?
Yes!
If this is your first time visiting the Colosseum, I highly recommend taking a guided tour rather than simply buying an admission ticket and exploring on your own.
The Colosseum itself is incredible, but having someone explain what you’re actually looking at makes the experience so much more interesting.
Our guide shared historical information and stories that helped bring ancient Rome to life. Instead of simply looking at old stone walls and trying to imagine what happened there thousands of years ago, we had context for what we were seeing.
The tour also included the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill, so we were able to experience three of the most important archaeological sites in ancient Rome in one visit.
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
If you’re visiting Rome for the first time, this is one tour I’d happily recommend.
Our Colosseum Tour Experience Review
We booked the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill guided tour through Viator.
The tour is designed to take you through three major ancient Roman sites: the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, and Roman Forum. The advertised experience takes approximately 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on the tour option and itinerary.
For us, the biggest benefit was having a guide.
I know some people prefer exploring independently, and that’s completely understandable. But when you’re standing in the middle of something as historically significant as the Roman Forum, it can be difficult to understand exactly what you’re seeing without some explanation.

Having a guide made a huge difference.
Instead of simply walking around and thinking, “That’s an old building,” we learned about the people, events, and history connected to the places we were visiting.
And honestly, that’s what made the tour so interesting.
What Does the Colosseum Tour Include?
The tour we took included three major attractions:
The Colosseum
Obviously, this is the star of the show.
Walking into the Colosseum for the first time is one of those travel moments that actually lives up to the hype.
It’s enormous, impressive, and almost surreal when you think about how long it has been standing.
The guided portion helped us understand what life was like here and gave us a better appreciation for the architecture and history.
Palatine Hill
Palatine Hill is one of the seven hills of Rome and is closely connected to the city’s ancient history.
The views are also fantastic.
This portion of the tour gives you a completely different perspective from the Colosseum. Instead of being surrounded by the massive structure, you’re walking through ancient ruins and looking out over parts of Rome.
Roman Forum
The Roman Forum was another highlight.
This was once the center of political, religious, and social life in ancient Rome. Today, you’re walking among ruins, columns, temples, and other remnants of the ancient city.
Without a guide, I think it would have been much harder for us to understand the significance of everything around us.

That’s one of the biggest reasons I recommend taking a Colosseum guided tour.
Was the Colosseum Tour Informative?
Yes—and this was probably my favorite part.
I don’t want to walk through a historic site and just take pictures. I want to know why it matters.
Our tour gave us that context.
We learned about ancient Rome, the Colosseum, and the surrounding archaeological sites while actually standing in the places where history happened.

It made the experience feel much more alive.
If you’re someone who loves history, you’ll probably really appreciate having a knowledgeable guide.
But even if you’re not a huge history buff, I think you’ll get more out of the experience with a guide than you would simply wandering around on your own.
Visiting the Colosseum in August: Be Prepared for Heat!
Now let’s talk about something I definitely don’t want you to overlook.
August in Rome is HOT.
And when you’re touring the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill, you’re spending a lot of time outside.
There isn’t endless shade, and you’re walking over ancient surfaces for several hours.
Viator specifically recommends bringing water, wearing comfortable walking shoes, and using sun protection because much of the route can be exposed with limited shade during hot weather.
We were there in August, and I was so glad we came prepared.
It can be so hot in August that they don’t even do tours on the arena floor, because temperatures down there can get dangerously hot. However, this WOULD be a great tour to take!
Bring plenty of water.
Seriously.
Don’t assume you’ll be fine without it. Bring a reusable water bottle and refill it whenever you have the opportunity.
Note: There are fountains in the colosseum to make refilling your easy and convenient.
Bring an AC neck fan.

This was one of my favorite things we brought to Rome.
I know it sounds a little extra, but when you’re walking around in the August heat, that little breeze around your neck feels AMAZING.
If you’re visiting Rome during the summer, I highly recommend one.
Wear comfortable shoes.
This is not the time to worry about having the cutest shoes.
You’re going to be walking.
A lot.
Wear shoes you’ve already broken in and that you’re comfortable wearing for several hours.
Wear sunscreen.
Don’t forget your sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.
You’re going to be exposed to the sun for a significant portion of the tour.
Are There Bathrooms at the Colosseum?
Yes!
This is one of those practical travel questions that I always want answered before visiting a major attraction.
There are bathrooms available during the visit, which is definitely helpful when you’re spending several hours exploring the area.
And yes, there are also drinking fountains, which were especially welcome during our August visit.
I would still bring your own reusable water bottle because staying hydrated is incredibly important, especially during the summer.
How Long Does the Colosseum Tour Take?
The tour is advertised as approximately 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on the specific option and itinerary.
I would plan for several hours rather than trying to squeeze another major attraction immediately afterward.
Remember, you’re not just visiting the Colosseum.

You’re also exploring the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, and there can be delays getting through security.
Give yourself some breathing room in your Rome itinerary.
Is the Colosseum Tour Good for Families?

I think it can be.
The Colosseum is one of those attractions that can be fascinating for kids because you’re actually standing inside an enormous piece of ancient history.
However, keep the heat and amount of walking in mind.
If you’re visiting Rome with children in the summer, I’d be especially intentional about:
- Bringing plenty of water
- Wearing comfortable shoes
- Taking advantage of water fountains
- Wearing sunscreen and hats
- Bringing an AC neck fan
- Planning some downtime afterward
The heat can make a long sightseeing day much more exhausting than you expect.
What Should You Bring on a Colosseum Tour?
Here’s my personal Colosseum tour packing list and thing I’d have on my Rome packing list:
- Water bottle – Don’t skip this!
- AC neck fan – Especially if visiting in summer
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Sunscreen
- Sunglasses
- Hat
- Portable phone charger
- Small bag
- Camera or phone

I wouldn’t overpack.
You’ll be walking around for several hours, so the lighter your bag, the better.
A Few Things to Know Before Your Colosseum Tour
There are a few practical things I’d know before booking.
Bring identification
The current tour information states that participant names are required when booking and that travelers must present a valid government-issued ID or passport matching the reservation name for entry.
So don’t casually enter names when booking. Make sure they’re correct.

Expect security
You may experience delays getting through security, so don’t schedule something immediately afterward.
The itinerary can change
The tour provider notes that the order of the sites may change depending on circumstances.
Don’t worry if your itinerary doesn’t happen in exactly the order you expected.
Expect walking
This is not a sit-down sightseeing experience.
You’re exploring ancient archaeological sites, so comfortable shoes are a must.
Would I Take This Colosseum Tour Again?
Absolutely.
I went into the experience wondering whether paying for a guided tour was really necessary.
I came away thinking it was money well spent.
Could we have walked around the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill on our own?
Sure.

But I don’t think we would have learned nearly as much.
The guide gave us historical context and information that made the sites much more meaningful.
And isn’t that what travel is about?
I don’t just want to see a place. I want to understand what I’m seeing.
My Final Colosseum Guided Tour Review

After taking this tour ourselves, I would definitely recommend it.
The Colosseum was one of the highlights of our time in Rome, and seeing it with a guide made the experience so much more interesting.
I loved that the tour didn’t just focus on the Colosseum. Being able to visit Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum as part of the same experience gave us a much better understanding of ancient Rome.
If you’re trying to decide whether a Colosseum tour is worth it, my answer is yes.
Especially if this is your first trip to Rome.
And if you’re visiting during the summer, learn from me: water + sunscreen + comfortable shoes + an AC neck fan.
You’ll thank me later. 😉
